Interview with Gilles de Preux

The RESONANCE project is a comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiative by the SSE Group, launched in 2024. It aims to integrate ESG principles into the company's business model, aligning with its values and culture. The project represents a significant step towards sustainable development and innovation within the civil explosives and fine chemicals sectors.

Let’s ask Gilles de Preux, CEO of the SSE Group, some questions about this transformative initiative.

1. What inspired the creation of the RESONANCE initiative, and how does it fit into the long-term strategic vision of SSE?

The RESONANCE project is rooted in our dedication to enhancing our historical values while embracing our commitment to environmental and social responsibility. This Group initiative will steer daily operations and align with SSE‘s long-term strategic objectives. Our goal is to be a market pioneer in innovation, sustainability, and premium services within the civil explosives and fine chemicals sectors. With this ESG initiative, we aim to position our Group as a reference partner in all these aspects and actively participate in the ecological and social transition of our world.

2. In what ways does SSE Group view ESG as an opportunity rather than a constraint, and how is this perspective integrated into your business model?

Our Group views ESG as a strategic opportunity, not a constraint. We believe that embracing ESG principles enhances our value proposition, drives innovation, and supports sustainable development. RESONANCE aligns us with the evolving expectations of investors, consumers, and regulators, and above all, it binds all our employees to our ESG responsibilities. This initiative will consolidate and coordinate all ESG actions, making ESG a catalyst for innovation and growth, and reinforcing our commitment to responsible business practices and long-term profitability.

3. RESONANCE seems to be your management tool to move to the next step of the company evolution. Can you explain how SSE Group’s transition from an explosive manufacturer to a comprehensive premium service provider has impacted its business model and growth? And what to expect in the next step where RESONANCE will be the driver?

Over the last 10 years, we have transformed our Group from a recognized manufacturer to a comprehensive premium service provider. To achieve this vision, we have modified our business model across our two main activities, Civil explosive and Fine Chemical, and integrated new and innovative solutions. This transition has broadened our market reach, enhanced our service offerings, and increased our revenue streams, resulting in substantial growth in both sales and employee numbers. RESONANCE will support the next phase of our evolution, driving further transformation by integrating innovative and sustainable solutions into our core operations. It will serve as a powerful management tool, accelerating our journey towards becoming a premium service provider with a focus on positive environmental and social impacts.

4. How does the RESONANCE project aim to accelerate innovation and sustainability within SSE?

RESONANCE aims to accelerate innovation and sustainability by focusing on five strategic pillars: unlocking innovation for profitable growth, climate actions, caring for our people, fostering communities, and bringing our purpose to life. These pillars guide our efforts to develop cutting-edge, safe, inclusive, and environmentally conscious solutions through flagship initiatives that will be announced in the next two months. These initiatives empower our employees to become ambassadors for positive change and partner with customers and suppliers on sustainability journeys, thereby enhancing our overall impact and driving sustainable business growth.

5. Can you discuss the governance structure of the RESONANCE project and how it ensures effective implementation and accountability?

The governance of the RESONANCE project is designed to ensure robust oversight, effective implementation, and accountability for all ESG initiatives. It engages both the non-executive and executive boards of directors, who play a critical role in driving the program. This governance framework includes clearly defined roles and responsibilities and cross-functional teams to implement and track progress. By involving all levels of the organization, from leadership to frontline employees, the governance structure ensures alignment with the project’s goals and a commitment to its success. Most importantly, RESONANCE is becoming an integral part of our daily thinking and operations.

Thank you, Gilles de Preux, for providing us with a comprehensive understanding of this pioneering project. Your dedication to sustainability and innovation not only drives our company‘s progress but also sets a benchmark for the Civil Explosives and Fine Chemicals industry!
